The Site Exposure Matrix
The Site Exposure Matrix is the Department of Labor website for researching chemical and toxin exposure. The SEM is used by claims examiners and open for public use. The purpose of the site is to allow an avenue for research into the chemicals and toxins workers were exposed to during their employment at nuclear weapons facilities. While the website is a depository of information about toxic chemicals it is difficult to use. It is, however, very important for all part E claims. The EEOICP places the burden of proof on the claimant to establish the causation for the chemical exposure and occupational illness. Therefore, in order to establish that the exposures to certain chemicals more likely than not were a significant factor in causing, contributing to or aggravating the occupational illness the SEM becomes vital to proving a claim.
